# Understanding Carrier Fees

> Learn more about how carrier fees are calculated and applied to your billing.

## What are carrier fees?

These are surcharges that the mobile carriers apply to both inbound and outbound messages. They will differ depending on the type of message such as (SMS or MMS) and the phone number that is sending the message. There are 3 different types (e.g. Short Code, Toll-Free Number, or 10-Digit Long Code).

Our Estimated carrier fees are based on the average fees across all messages Emotive sends.
